Saturday Programs and Winter Camp 2018!
Happy New Year!
This year, Social Program is off to a bright start! Kicking off the year, our first program was the L.A. Zoo lights. Our clients and volunteers headed to the Zoo on January 6th and enjoyed a night filled with lights, animals—even reindeer!—gardens, and an amazing lights and water show. New volunteer Roxanne Riva joined us for the first time and raved at how much fun she had with the group and enjoyed seeing all the clients look out for each other and spend time with one another.
Later in the month, our social program got to enjoy another awesome water and lights show, famously known as World of Color at Disney’s California Adventure Park! On the evening of January 18th, our clients and volunteers packed up their bags and headed off to ICAN Winter camp at the Anaheim Disney parks for a three-day weekend. This year marked our largest Winter Camp group to date since switching from a trip to the snow 10 years ago. With over eighty people in total, we were easily seen and known throughout the parks. Staff and park goers alike were excited to have us and eager to make our time there as enjoyable as possible for our clients. The weekend was fun and filled with friends.
Day program client, Grace Kanenari, joined us for her first ICAN camp at this year’s winter camp. When asked about her experience, she emphatically stated, “Camp was so fun! I had a great time, and can’t wait to come again.” She was all smiles as she talked about her favorite ride of the weekend Space Mountain and said that she liked how fast the ride went. Referring to her group that she spent the weekend with, she said she “had such a fun time and really enjoyed being with [her] friends.” Social program was lucky to have Grace and many others from Day Program join us at Disneyland. As well as clients, we had several staff members from both Day Program and Supported Employment tag along, as well as many other returning friends.
Looking forward, February is going to put on quite a show. Our three events will be spent at the theater, the movies, and “on the court.” The Hollywood Pantages theater is bringing Broadway’s Aladdin to Los Angeles, and we are excited to join the magic carpet ride on the 10th. Then we have a jam-packed weekend on the 24th & 25th, spending a day cheering on the Harlem Globetrotters Saturday and seeing the new adaptation of Peter Rabbit on Sunday. We hope to see you at an event soon!
