Day Program - Winter Update
The Life Skills Day Program has much to be thankful for as we start 2018! We just celebrated our two year anniversary as a program and are now providing this community-based service for about 50 clients and their families. We have also successfully transitioned from our original location in Hermosa Beach to our new temporary site located just a few blocks from the Redondo Beach Pier. Our clients have been exploring our new neighborhood and becoming familiar with all that the Redondo Beach area has to offer!
Each month, our team chooses a new theme to focus on throughout the variety of clubs that our clients participate in. For the month of January, the theme has been “New Year, New Goals!” with an emphasis on establishing personal goals for 2018. Many of our clients expressed that a personal goal for the year is to choose healthier food options, so our Cooking Club started the year off by stirring up some healthy soup recipes such as vegetable detox soups!
Our Duct Tape Club has been designing and crafting together their own personal vision boards for 2018 to creatively display and track their goals throughout the year.
The clients who have signed up for one of our Fitness Clubs are all working toward completing a virtual marathon throughout the month by walking and/or running a 10K! Clients not only get to work on their fitness goals, but also their goal to give back to charity as we are currently supporting the Make A Wish Foundation through the virtual marathon.
One of the primary life goals that many of our clients in the Day Program have is to be able to work at a job out in the community. We are committed to helping our clients build the skills they will need to thrive in the working environment, and one way we do this is by partnering with the ICAN Marketplace department to provide opportunities for the Day Program clients to work for several of our micro-enterprises. We currently have Career Clubs that focus on running our online Etsy shop, which includes creating and selling both wreaths and our wire-work jewelry, training for our Hermosa Coffee Co. coffee cart, and even starting up our own eBay account where they will learn to process online orders from start to finish on the eBay website. Our clients are gaining vocational skills such as customer service, money/time management, and working together as a team. We are so proud of how hard our clients work to make all of this happen.
We are off to a great start this year and are excited to continue to build on these goals with each new month!
